The Main to Miltenberg :
This morning was rather a rather leisurely cruise to Miltenberg. We passed through several canals taking us to higher levels of the river. The water levels seem to be high and holding. This may be due to all the locks. The sundeck was closed all day as we did pass under several low bridges.
During the late morning there was a glass blowing demonstration. The artisan was a contemporary of Dale Caholie. Interesting for sure as he spoke about the different kinds of glass.
After lunch we docked at Miltenberg. We opted for a food tour. This was a walking tour to the older areas of Miltenberg. As we walked and learned of the history of Miltenberg, we sampled various local food. Our first stop was a sausage shop where we had a nice smoky bologna, the next stop was at a bakery for a apple and cherry crumble cake. We proceeded to the older section of town and our next stop was a chocolate shop, where we had a marzipan chocolate drop. Deeper we proceeded into the 1300 section of town to see the oldest house and into the artisan section. Our next stop was a cellar where local liquor and schnapps were produced. The location was a cave dug straight into the hillside. These caves were used as refrigerators. We sampled a peach liquor, black currant liquor, and hazelnut liquor. All were very good. From there we made our way to the oldest brewery in Miltenberg.
Our guide recommended we stop at the oldest brauhaus on Germany. We did stop in and chatted with some fellow cruisers. They found their food order rather large and shared a bratwurst with us. I, in turn, bought their beer. Fun to say we have been in this establishment.
While we were visiting Miltenberg, our ship repositioned through a set of locks. This set of locks is a first come first serve and often there is a long wait and line. So Viking River Cruises bussed us from Miltenberg to Werthsberg where the ship was waiting.
This is where the best Doner Kebab was the whole trip. Hands down.
