Marksburg Castle and Cruising the Rhine:

Marksburg Castle and Cruising the Rhine:

I must say the food and service is most excellent here on the Viking Ships. We had a great breakfast and our server found a bottle of HP sauce , “brown sauce” for me, SCORE !!!!!

AT 0800 our packed bags were placed outside our door for transfer during the day to our new ship the Baldur.  For those of you just joining, we have had to change ships due to very low levels of water in the Rhine. This is a day by day decision so currently we will not know if we are changing again. As we have said, up the Rhine, it is very obvious how low the water level is. Our ship has a draft of 1.6 meters.

This day started with a walking tour of the Marksburg Castle. This Castle has been restored and is an excellent example of daily life in such a structure. Our tour covered the defense, the living area, the work areas, and the torture area.  It was an interesting time in history.  One point of interest is the vast majority of the castles were sacked in 1680 by the French.

We enjoyed the great views from the castle heights.

After our tour, we returned to the ship for lunch. I enjoyed the Cuban sandwiches and apple beignet.  After lunch Lynn and I went ashore to wander about the town.

At 1300 a tour boat arrived. This was a multi deck boat used for sightseeing the Rhine.  It was a cool breezy on the open top deck, but for us, that was the place to be. There were free flowing beverages available and we were also served a very healthy piece of lemon cake. Our Cruise Director gave a running commentary of the cities and castles. There just a few hardy souls who enjoyed the top deck with us.

The scenic cruise ended after dark and we then traveled by bus to meet our new ship the Viking Baldur. We found our luggage in the stateroom and quickly settled in.  These ships are virtually identical so for this part the transition is easy.

Dinner that night was Butternut Squash Soup, Veal Tenderloin, Mahi Mahi and for desert we had a desert sampler plate.
