For several years we have been traveling through Dover on our way to other destination and always seemed to comment “we need to spend some time in Dover”. The locals we have chatted with have told us the standing joke is that no one stays in Dover and they just pass through. This trip we have stayed in Dover for three days and have had the most wonderful time.
Dover is not to be missed or overlooked, as there is a great deal of history and charm. From the moment we arrived to our leaving today, we felt the warmth of this community. I highly recommend one stay a bit here and drink in the history and charm this city has to offer.
Last night we closed down the Cellar here at Blakes of Dover. It is such a fun pub, filled with friendly folk. There was no disappointment here at Blakes, as the accommodations, food, drink and overall atmosphere were spot on. I am looking forward to our return in September.
This morning we walked over to Chaplins Cafe and had a full English, as we will be walking to the port we felt we would need the sustenance for the mile plus walk. The Full English was very very filling. Their menu looked great offering bacon sandwiches, scones and much more. The food here was very nice.
We returned to Blakes and gathered our bags and started our walking journey to the port. Our walk was just a bit over a mile and a half to the port. Not a bad walk at all on nice walkway. We dropped our bags and quickly checked in and met friends in the waiting area as we waited to board.
After boarding lunch was in order at Lumieres a dining room themed on Beauty and the Beast. This avoids the hectic first day lunch at Cabanas. We went to our stateroom and found our luggage had arrived so we started the unpacking process.
The Mandatory Safety Drill was conducted in smart fashion after which we went to Deck 10 for the sail away. We had the funny suspicion we would be leaving late as there were many pallets of food and many carts of luggage to be brought aboard. The scheduled departure was to have been 1645 and we finally departed at about 1830.
One highlight was to see two Spitfires fly overhead. I could faintly hear the roar of the powerful engines as the passed high overhead. What a sight to see over the White Cliffs and I could not help think of the Battle of Britain. Sadly, by the time I noticed they had passed and were flying into the sun so no photos were made. One pilot seemed to be having a grand time demonstrating the agility of his aircraft. For me this was spine tingling.
We attended a Disney Vacation Club members meet where free drinks were offered, then came dinner.
Our serving team is excellent and very attentive to our dining experience. Very full from our meal ,we retreated to our stateroom and called it a night.
7/22/2019 A Day at Sea.
I was up early and did an early morning walkabout, while having some coffee.
Then I pressed my jacket for formal night and caught up on my writing and photographs.
Breakfast was nice, good bacon and HP Sauce. We were joined by some folks we met at Blakes and had a great chat.
Weather started out overcast and gradually turned to a nice partially cloudy day. This was a simple day of relaxing on the ship and meeting and seeing folks from all over. It was fun to meet a Facebook friend of 10 years for the first time, we have much in common, so it was great to finally meet.
Our serving team is great and we will be requesting them for our trans Atlantic sailing.
Off to be bed as we will be birding tomorrow.
