ALESUND, WHAT A WONDERFUL PORT

7/28/2019 - Day at Sea

Simply just a relaxing day.

Alesund 7/29/2019

In 1904 there was a fire where much of the town was destroyed.  Kaiser Whilhelm of Germany had vacationed in the area, and loved the area. Hearing of the fire he sent 4 warships  with supplies to build shelter for the 10,000 displaced residents. Only one person died in the fire, the 76-year-old Ane Heen.

Ålesund has the most important fishing harbor in Norway. The town's fishing fleet is one of the most modern in Europe. Ålesund and surroundings also has a large furniture industry. Some well-known household items are manufactured here.

In Alesund there is a 418 step staircase leading to a platform where one can get an excellent view of the city. Our plan had been to climb the stairs but the weather had turned warm and we looked at other options.  We found ourselves at the local visitors center and learned of a living history museum. It was easy to get to via public bus.

The Sunnomre Museum is a group of relocated and restored buildings from the area. Here we get a glimpse into various time periods and the daily life of each period.

There was a person working a log into a beam and we chatted a bit about period wood working. Interesting to me is he just used two  different axes to for the beam. One he called a small axe and the other was a broad axe.

I also noted some architectural elements which were of interest to me. One in particular was the use of flat stones to shed the weather from the posts holding up the structure.

Our visit here, including the bus fare, was about $18 for both of us.  The cruise line excursion was significantly a good bit more.

We then made our way back to town on the 602 bus. We departed the bus a bit early so as to walk through the town a bit. We stopped for a drink and then returned to the ship.

We enjoyed the evening shows and dinner before calling it a day.
