A day in Reykjavik and the SAILAWAY:

A day in Reykjavik and the SAILAWAY:

Breakfast At World Cafe the off we go.

Our first excursion will be taking us to The Árbær Open Air Museum.

The Árbær Open Air Museum is Iceland ‘s largest of its kind and home to a fascinating collection of historical buildings, most of which were relocated from Reykjavík’s city centre. Each of the buildings has a story to tell.

Showcasing diverse architectural styles, the museum area is divided into a square, a village and a countryside section, vividly portraying Reykjavík’s small-town life and environment in the 19th and 20th centuries. In summer, you can easily spot the museum staff dressed in attire from bygone eras and actively participating in the museum’s events and exhibitions, portraying aspects of Reykjavík’s history.

One plus to this excursion was we were granted early entry before opening. One down side is we did not have time to explore the whole area. Having been there before we knew many areas were not available to us. Still a nice experience.

We were then bused to the old marina area for a photo op. We saw the Hurtigurten MS Fram in the old harbor. This is the ship we will be on sailing from Reykjavik to Svalbard.

The bus then took us to the Harpa where we left the group and made our way to our pool. We enjoyed a soak and an after swim hot dog.

We then walked back to the ship. This was a good little jaunt, a good bit over a mile.

Back onboard we went to Mamsen’s for lunch. Nice open face sandwiches were had and a waffle for dessert was in order.

As I was up way too early, we attended the port talk for tomorrow in our stateroom.

As the ship prepares to sail away, we have a second safety briefing.

Tonight we have an 8:00pm dining reservation but at a little before 6:00pm we learn that some excursions have yet to return. We thought this may open up an earlier time for dining. Yes it did.

We enjoyed an excellent 5 course meal at The Chef’s Table. The food and pairings were spot on. Photos to follow.

Back to the room and changed into more comfortable clothes and started to drift off as the full stomachs were begging a rest. This was interrupted with the spotting of a few whales off the starboard side of the ship. I could not get a good image of them yet they were nice to see. Given their size, we believe they were Minke Whales.

We then watched the stage show, which was a very nice collection of vocals from Broadway shows.

Now off to bed with thoughts of what will tomorrow bring.

BIG PHOTO DUMP FOR THE DAY:
