GREAT BREAKFAST, A T-REX, AND CHRISTMAS LIGHTS

 Black Friday in London:

After a very long travel day and a most excellent dining experience at The Mayflower Pub we crashed hard last night. In room coffee was nice to have this morning.

We gathered ourselves together and walked to the Tower Hill station. Taking the District line to Wimbledon getting off at Putney Bridge, we made our way to the River Cafe directly across the street from the entrance.  It is best described as a greasy spoon with a very good fry up. What’s nice about the River Cafe is you can order what you want. There are set plates but you can customize your order.

Lynn had eggs and toast. I had bacon, beans on toast, hash-browns and tomatoes. All was excellent. I would highly recommend this out-of-the-way café for a great breakfast experience.

I must add that the staff is very friendly and welcoming. We will be returning probably even before this trip is over.

After our breakfast, we took the Underground District Line to the Gloucester Road station. From there we walked to the Natural History Museum. The collections here are amazing and well worth a visit. During the Christmas season, a T-Rex is outfitted with a different Christmas jumper each year. Yes I had to get myself one.

We spent a good deal and more of the morning here at the museum.

We returned back to Gloucester Road and did some shopping at at Waitrose for some light meal supplies. We seem to be ready for a couple light meals after last night and this morning.

We headed back via the District Line to Tower Hill to return to the hotel through the Christmas market. We shared a tuna and cucumber sandwich for lunch.

The dragon boundary marks are cast iron statues of dragons (sometimes mistaken for griffins) on metal or stone plinths that mark the boundaries of the City of London. The dragons are painted silver, with details of their wings and tongue picked out in red.

Over our lunch break we did some laundry and planned a Christmas Lights Underground/Walk Spectacular.

We took the District Line to Embankment and then walked to Trafalgar Square for the Christmas Market there, enjoying the lights along the way.

From Trafalgar, we made our way to Piccadilly Circus as we enjoyed the lights all about.

From there we were going to take the Underground to Covent Gardens. Alas the best laid plans were foiled. The train ahead of us broke down and we had to alight at Leichester. We then walked to Covent Gardens and viewed the lights along the way.

We made a few attempts to stop at a pub along the way but found them to be overcrowded. It is a Friday night.

We then headed back to the Tower Hill area and tried to stop at The Minories for a drink. Again, very crowded so we passed and made our way back to our hotel. We did walk through our local Christmas Market which was pleasantly calm.

Dinner tonight is a simple meal of soup, bread and cheese.

Tomorrow is the Sarnie Party Christmas Special at Somerset House. We are looking forward to seeing what Christmas Sandwiches will be created and offered. I have a feeling it will be very filling.
