OFF TO SEE SEA DOG BAMSE

 OFF TO SEE BAMSE:

The ship is a few minutes behind schedule so we are delayed by 15 or so minutes.

The skies are cloudy and wind is blowing and just a pinch of snow is falling.

This morning we passed through a narrow channel narrow channel north of the island of Skervøy, here is a place where the Sami swim their reindeer 1.6K across to a grazing area.

We soon docked in Honningsvag. Here our plan is to do a walkabout visiting Bamse, a small brew pub, and who know what else.

Many of our fellow passengers will be going to the North Cape.

We got off the ship and donned our spikes and walked to the statue of Bamse for some photos. The story of Bamse is heart touching. During WWII he fled Honningsvag with his owner a Captain in the Norwegian Navy. They fled with their ship to Scotland where they took on the duties of mine sweeping in the North Atlantic.

When in his Scotland port and it was time to sail, Bamse would go from Pub to Pub gathering his shipmates alerting them to return to duty. Bamse even had his own bus pass. He was also credited for saving the lives of some of his shipmates.

When Bamse died he was buried in Scotland with full military honors. His funeral was attended by over 700 people.

There is a statue of Bamse in Montrose, Scotland where he is buried. His statue in Scotland faces Norway and the statue in Norway faces Scotland. The book, Sea Dog Bamse, is a great read.

After paying our respects to Bamse, we walked along the waterfront for some photos, then up to the main street to visit a grocery store. Yes, I added to my shopping bags of the world collection.

Kick Sleds are a common way to get around Honningsvag

Next we found the brew Pub. In the basement of the old Christian meeting hall you can find the "Sjøgata Pub”. They are attached to it's own brewery (Perleporten Kulturbryggeri) and yes they have the best selection of beers in Honningsvag. There is a warm and welcoming atmosphere at this pub and is legendary and must be experienced.

The owner gave us a tour of the brewery area. Yes the beers are excellent and the atmosphere warm and welcoming.

Now we are back onboard and will later have our daily gathering and dinner before calling it a night.

Tonight we will enter the Barents Sea.
