SOGGY MOOSE RETURNS TO SOUTH AFRICA SEARCHING FOR THE SPIRIT OF THE GREAT HEART:
It was just a bit over 10 years ago we visited the wonderful country of South Africa. At that time I was not an active photographer, so this will change some of my perspective on this visit. Still I will be searching for the Spirit of a Great Heart.
As usual our research has been done. I have reread “A Long Walk To Freedom” and “Playing The Enemy” as well as a couple books on the history of South Africa. Nelson Mandela was an amazing man who learned and showed us how to understand each other.
I will think of the above song as we cross the waters to Robben Island, and have a tear in my eye, darn onions.
We have always enjoyed the music of South Africa which includes Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Hugh Masekela, and probably my favorite, Johnny Clegg. We have been lucky enough to see Johnny Clegg in concert a couple times. Johnny Clegg was an amazing performer and his concerts were a learning experience. His music always moved me. RIP sir, you have made the crossing.
The food of South Africa is a blend of spices and I recently used a Cast Iron Potjie Pot to make a beef Potjie while camping. This style of cooking was used by the Boers as they trekked in their wagons.
Revisiting the Kapama Game reserve will be nice armed with cameras and lenses. Meeting our baggage limits makes this a challenge, but I feel good about the camera gear we will be taking. The bird life will be amazing and guide book is packed. Then there are the mammals, The Big 5 and others.
I am sure we will enjoy a braai (Afrikaans for a BBQ), some biltong, bush meat and some great South African Wine. All in al, it should be a great trip, even with pandemic and mighty long airplane rides. So soon we will be off to the far side of the world.
SO BUCKLE UP AS WE ARE HEADED TO THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD.
