ALUQUERQUE ALOFT

Albuquerque Aloft -

On the Friday morning before the official start of the AIBF, several pilots  inflate their balloon at many of the Albuquerque and Rio Rancho area schools grounds. Here they may launch or stay tethered.

This event started in 2005 with the intent of bringing the joy of ballooning to the local children of the Albuquerque area. Here, students, their parents and teachers meet the pilots and crews and learn more about ballooning. Albuquerque Aloft is the only Balloon Fiesta event in which balloons launch from pre-designated sites outside of Balloon Fiesta Park.  This gives the local residents a preview of the many colorful balloons participating in the AIBF.

The inflation will start at about 0645, with a launch scheduled between 0700 and 0730 (weather dependent).

The weather at 0300 was cloudy but no rain. Then at 0400 a thunderstorm rolled through and the rain started and kept up all morning. Local news reported some schools were having events so off I went. Then I received a txt msg from Lynn who learned from local news the event had been canceled. I did go to my assigned school and they were doing a fund raiser for their PTA. They had a cardboard gondola set up with a blue background with clouds. I did get some photos for AIBF, but will not post pictures of these kids in the blog.
