Oslo to Bergen
Sleep started really well but then eluded me. Such is life.
From the our hotel room, including security, to the SAS Club was only 35 min. The Domestic SAS lounge was nice and they had Brown Cheese.
A nice 55min uneventful flight to Bergen. As we approached, the skies cleared revealing snow capped mountains and fjords.
Kewl Airport things I really liked:
Off the plane and collected our bags and found the Flybus which was getting ready to leave. About a 45-50 minute ride into our stop. Then a short walk to the Clarion Admiral Hotel. We will be here for three nights before boarding the ship.
Room View:
Our room safe was locked so we waited a bit for some assistance in opening. Then we shall head out to find a hotdog.
We were successful in finding Trekroneren. There is a reason this little hot dog stand has been in business for decades; quality. Trekroneren specializes in high-quality sausages with quality toppings. This is not just food to feed your hunger, this is a culinary experience out of the ordinary. All of Trekroneren’s sausages are prepared at a local butcher just a 30 minutes walk from the stand. And all except one sausage are made exclusively by meat from local farms. The last one is the reindeer sausage, where the meat naturally comes from Northern Norway. Quality costs, and Trekroneren is by no means the cheapest sausage seller in town, but these sausages are definitively worth the extra penny.
It may be hard to believe that a simple Norwegian hot dog stand has gained any international attention at all, but during its lifetime, Trekroneren has become world-famous. In its 74 years, the stand has received visitors from virtually every nation in the world.
We split a reindeer sausage, topping suggested were a berry sauce, a spicy mustard and crispy onions. IT WAS EXCELLENT!!! Which one of their delicacies will we have tomorrow?
We then wandered the streets and stopped at a local grocery store where we laid in some supplies for the room.
A very civilized country.
When we were here in December 2022, we visited a gingerbread house display consisting of 100’s of houses. Here gingerbread is a holiday specialty so we got a small tin of pepperkaker (ginger bread cookies).
A bit about Bergen.
Bergen is known as “the capital of the fjords”. Perfectly situated between the two biggest fjords in Norway, the Hardangerfjord and the Sognefjord.
Bryggen features colorful wooden houses on the old wharf, once a center of the Hanseatic League's trading empire. The Hanseatic League was a Medieval commercial and defensive confederation of merchant guilds and market town in Central and Northern Europe. Growing from a few towns in the late 12th century, the League expanded between the 13th and 15th centuries and ultimately encompassed nearly 200 settlements across seven modern-day countries.
In Bergen there is a Hanseatic Museum, an aquarium, many museums and yes a hot dog stand we will most definitely find and enjoy.
Our big question for our arrival in Bergen is whether or not to get a Bergen card.
I think we are still adjusting to the time change and will again call it an early evening. This hotel is not for us early risers as breakfast starts at 0800. At least we have coffee in the room.
