OFF TO SEE SOME PETROGLYPHS

Off to see some Petroglyphs

This trip will take us to North Central Wyoming in search of Petroglyphs and A Native American Medicine Wheel.

We had planned this trip about 3 months ago as reservations for camping are handy rather than relying upon finding a walk up camp site. These locations are not on the main roads and somewhat in the outback where there is no cell service.  We would hate to drive several hundred miles and not have a campsite.

As I said, these locations are well off the beaten track and we believe we will not have cell service. The Campgrounds are simple and basically offer us a camp site with a fire ring and outhouse. Water can be had from pumps located throughout the campground. Medicine Lodge Campground only has 21 sites of which only 5 are reservable.

We did not go camping locally in Cheyenne and had a full week to get the camper together, so propane was filled, generator was filled with gasoline, menu was planned, clothes were packed, weather checked, local information was gathered, etc etc.

On Friday June 15th all we had to do was grab a cup of coffee, a simple breakfast, load The Boys, set the alarm and get on the road.  So with enough food for forty days, forty troopers and forty mules, we hit the road.

Our route took us North on I-25 to Casper and then US20/26 to Shoshoni, WY, then north through the Wind River Canyon to Thermopolis, WY, arriving at the Wyoming Garden Campground.   Here we have full hookups and are staging for the next 6 nights of “Dry Camping” without  hookups.  So here we can fill up on water and make sure all batteries are charged.

We arrived after 325 miles of dusty trial, not really but it makes for a good story. We parked the camper and filled up Diesel Truck with fuel and found Dairyland Sweet Treats for an ice cream cone. I had a soft serve and Lynn had a hand dipped salted caramel cone.

Our 20 year old indoor/outdoor camp thermometer died and we found a replacement at the Local Shop. We like knowing how cold or hot we should feel.

Then we explored Hot Springs State Park, driving past the hot pools in search of the buffalo herd. We found them and stopped for a few photos before they disappeared over a ridge.

Next we noted a fenced Bark Park, here we let The Boys have some exercise. There were agility obstacles and we only had success with the incline/decline obstacle. We will not talk about their efforts or lack there of on the weaving poles.

Back to the campground for pulled BBQ chicken for dinner and a couple pup walks.

Wyoming Garden Campground is very well maintained, friendly staff, nice sites (a bit tight), and while next to the main drag is pretty darn quite. Yes we would stay here again. The price is very reasonable.

Might get some rain tonight as dark clouds are filling the skies.
