Day 6 Hidden London and Bacon Sandwich and British Museum
We slept in a little bit as our planned activities started much later, compared to the previous days. Due to a disabled train on the underground we had to get a bit creative and find a different route to the Monument station where our London Walks tour was to begin. Glad we started out early and had plenty of time, so we had a cup of coffee.
The London Walks Hidden London was great as expect and did not disappoint. We made our way from the Monument to the Great Fire to Black Friars. Along the way we made a couple stops at Guild Churches and Guild Halls. These are also called Liveries, and they controlled the various trades, from standards to apprenticeships. We first visited the St Mary Arc Church, and were most fortunate to be there as a youth choir was rehearsing for a performance, such a great sound in such a beautiful church. We also visited the Seaman’s Guild Church and learned of Richard Whittington the four time Mayor of the City of London. We also made our way to a square where the Black Friars had a monastery and chapel. It has long since been destroyed but this was the exact spot where Henry the VIII was told no to his divorce, and from this spot the separation of England and the Catholic church began.
Oldest Pub in London, so were told.
This choir was such a joy to listen to.
St Pauls Cathedral
Many other places were also uncovered on this very very rainy morning walk.
After our walk, we made our way to a coffee shop to access WIFI and lock in our upgrade for better seats home.
From there we made our way to the Embankment Cabbie Shelter and each got a bacon butty sandwich. These cost 2 pounds (they were 1 pound 60 in September), yet quite a bargain.
Then off to the Barbour store in Leadenhall Market so I could get a hat. From the we went to the British Museum so we could see the Ramses The Great artifacts and the Moai.
The Cartouche of Ramses
This being our last night we had our gala farewell ball at the Minories before heading back to the hotel to pack up and get ready for the journey home.
Thanks for following along and please share with one and all.
Soon we will be on the road to Kearney, Nebraska for the Sandhill Crane Festival.
